Czech Republic to Croatia Train

Train from Czech Republic to Croatia is one of the ways of travelling between these two countries. Although it is not the fastest or the most convenient way of travelling this distance, there are some popular train routes connecting Czech and Croatian cities, especially during the summer season. These routes are not direct but require a few train changes along the way. These routes are operated by Ceske drahy (Czech railways), RegioJet and HZPP

Below is the detailed guide for each popular train route from the Czech Republic to Croatia.

Prague – Zagreb

Trains from Prague to Zagreb operate throughout the year, but there are no direct trains. There are up to 5 daily departures, but on all of them, you need to change the train at least once. The route is operated mostly by the following types of trains:

  • InterCity (IC) trains
  • EuroCity (EC) trains
  • Railjet Express (RJX) trains
  • Railjet (RJ) trains
  • Nightjet (NJ) trains
  • EuroNight (EN) trains

The fastest route with only one train change is via Vienna. The waiting time between the trains is about an hour and the overall journey takes up to 12 hours

There are up to 4 train changes on other departures, trains usually make a stop in Vienna, Linz, Salzburg and Gyor. The waiting time between these trains varies from a few minutes to several hours. Accordingly, the overall journey takes from 12 to 20 hours. 

The price of a regular single ticket starts from €48, but it varies depending on the departure and date. 

However, taking a bus from Prague to Zagreb is a bit faster and more convenient option if looking for ground transportation between these two cities. 

Brno – Zagreb

Train from Brno to Zagreb is another popular route from the Czech Republic to Croatia. There are no direct trains, all departures require 1 to 4 train changes. There are usually up to 6 daily departures and these routes are operated by the following types of trains:

  • InterCity (IC) trains
  • EuroCity (EC) trains
  • Railjet Express (RJX) trains
  • Railjet (RJ) trains
  • Nightjet (NJ) trains
  • EuroNight (EN) trains

The fastest train goes via Vienna with only 1 train change. The waiting time between the trains is 1 hour. Accordingly, the overall journey takes around 9 hours

There are other departures where you need to change trains up to 4 times. These trains usually make a stop in Vienna, Graz, Budapest, Gyor. The waiting time between these trains varies from a few minutes to several hours. Accordingly, the overall journey takes from 10 to 16 hours.

The price of a regular single ticket starts from €38, but it varies depending on the departure and date. 

If looking for a faster ground transportation option, consider taking a bus from Brno to Zagreb.

Prague – Rijeka

Train from Prague to Rijeka is a popular route, especially during the summer season. Tourists who come to Rijeka by train then continue their trip by bus to further Croatian destinations. There are no direct trains connecting these two cities.

There are up to 2 regular all-year-round departures operated by Ceske drahy. On both trains, it is required to change trains up to 4 times. The route is usually operated by the following types of trains:

  • Railjet (RJ) trains
  • EuroCity (EC) trains
  • Fast trains
  • Regular trains

The waiting time between trains varies from a few minutes to several hours. Accordingly, the overall journey takes about 20-21 hours. 

There is also a seasonal train operating between Prague and Rijeka. This train is operated by RegioJet, it runs during the summer season and makes a stop in the following cities:

  • Czech Republic: Pardubice, Brno, Břeclav
  • Slovakia: Bratislava
  • Hungary: Csorna

Once in Croatia, buses operate from Rijeka train station to different Croatian cities such as Opatija, Pula, Rovinj, Poreč, Krk, Zadar, Biograd, Makarska, Šibenik, Primošten, Trogir and Split.

Tickets

A regular ticket for a train that runs all year round depends on the date and departure.

The price of a RegioJet seasonal train ticket starts from €22 for a wagon with seats. 

Alternatively, you can always take a bus from Prague to Rijeka and save a lot of time. 

Prague – Split

There is no direct train from Prague to Split, but it is possible to travel this route with several train changes. Therefore, travelling between these two cities is not the most popular option.

First, you need to take a train from Prague to Zagreb, as described in the first section. Then, you can continue from Zagreb to Split by train

An estimated total travelling time is around 18 hours, not including the waiting time in between. An estimated total price of all tickets is not under €75, depending on the train ticket which varies from departure to departure.

As an alternative, you can take a bus from Prague to Split and save some time and money. 

Prague – Dubrovnik

There is no train from Prague to Dubrovnik, although travelling between these two cities is popular. However, getting from Prague by train is possible only to Split (changing a train in Zagreb). The railway in Croatia stops in Split so there is no further train connection to Dubrovnik.

Anyway, if for some reason you want to travel from Prague to Dubrovnik by using the train as much as possible, here is how to do it:

  • First, you need to travel from Prague to Zagreb, and then to Split, as explained in the previous sections.
  • As there is no further train connection, consider alternative options to get from Split to Dubrovnik

An estimated total travelling time is around 22-23 hours, not including the waiting time in between. An estimated total price of all tickets is not under €85, depending on whether you choose to travel to Dubrovnik by bus or catamaran.

As the travelling time between these two cities is fairly long if taking a train, taking a bus from Prague to Dubrovnik instead can be a better solution.
