Zagreb – Osijek

Train from Zagreb to Osijek is one of the most popular train routes as it connects two biggest inland cities in Croatia. The route is operated by Hrvatske Željeznice with up to 4 daily departures. 

The train departs from Zagreb Main Train Station (Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor) located in the centre of Zagreb. The train arrives at Osijek Main Train Station, located about 5 minutes from the city centre. The train makes a stop at up to 19 more train stations between, depending on the departure.

Types of trains

The route Zagreb – Osijek is operated with up to 4 daily departures and by 3 types of trains – regular train, fast train and InterCity (IC) train

Regular trains offer 1st and 2nd class trains with no option of transporting a bicycle and the reservations are possible. The regular train makes a stop at 8 more stations and the journey takes approximately 4 hours.

InterCity (IC) trains offer 1st and 2nd class. The 1st class wagons provide more space and comfort for the passengers compared to the 2nd class. On these trains, reservation is required. This train makes a stop at 11 more stations between and the journey takes approximately 5 hours.

On departures where you travel the route by a regular train, the price of a single ticket for the 1st class is about 197 HRK (~€26) and the 2nd class is around 131 HRK (~€17).

On departures where you travel by a fast train, the price of a single ticket for the 1st class is about 204 HRK (~€27) and for the 2nd class around 138 HRK (~€18) 

On departures where you travel by an InterCity (IC) train, the price of a single ticket for the 1st class is about 215 HRK (~€28) and for the 2nd class around 150 HRK (~€20). 

Children between the age of 6 and 12, students and seniors have a 50% discount while youth between the age of 12 and 26 have a 30% discount.

NOTE: In some cases, passengers who bought a train ticket might be transferred by bus instead, either some part or the entire route. This happens when a certain part of the railway on the route is under construction, which is highly influenced by the air temperature. Summer heats can cause the railway to extend which leads to malfunctions, while extremely low temperatures in winter shrink the railway which can lead to breakage.

It is good to know that taking a bus from Zagreb to Osijek will save you some money and time. There are up to 22 daily depatures, including several night buses. Tickets start from €9 and the journey takes about 4 hours.
