Rijeka Train Station renovation progresses and proceeds according to schedule

The reconstruction of the Rijeka railway station, which began in March 2020, despite the pandemic and winter weather conditions, is progressing and proceeding according to schedule.

This historic building has long cried out for serious intervention and restoration that will restore its splendor from past periods. The renovation project, worth 2.1m euros, includes the complete refurbishment of the building’s façade, the refurbishment of the interior space for receiving and dispatching passengers, the official premises of traffic staff and the passenger toilet and air conditioning of the building.

Since this is a building that has been performing its original function since its construction in 1891, and which is located within the registered urban ensemble of the city of Rijeka and is entered in the Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Republic of Croatia, one of the most important and longest stages in its renovations are precisely conservation and restoration works.

Along with the rehabilitation of the facade of the building, works are currently being carried out on arranging the official premises of traffic staff, as well as preparatory works for installing air conditioning, while the rehabilitation of the toilet will begin after the renovation of passenger reception and dispatch.

The interior space for the reception of passengers includes the renovation of the vestibule, windshield, hallway, cloakroom, waiting room and aisle, and the planned scope of landscaping will greatly improve conditions for passengers and staff and ensure accessibility for people with reduced mobility in the Rijeka station building.

Certainly, with the completion of the entire project, the station building, built in the 19th century, will shine as it once did and Rijeka will finally get a railway station suitable for the needs of passengers in the 21st century.
